Family Movie Night - Sonic

Devotion on the movie Sonic

Before the movie read these Bible verses and brief commentary

Genesis 2:18- The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

God said it was not good for us to be alone.  We are made to be in community/relationship with God and with other people.  When we are isolated from God or from people, it can leave us feeling lonely, unsupported and unloved.  That’s not how God wants us to feel.  We can work on our relationship with God through reading the Bible, praying, going to church, helping others, etc.  We can work on our relationship with others by thinking about others and being a good friend.  If you want to have good friends, the first step is to be a good friend.

In the movie, see if you can see how a relationship and/or sense of community changes people’s lives and perspective.

John 13:34 - "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Jesus gave us a new command during the Last Supper and that is to love others as he first loved us.  Now, Jesus tells us this, because he wants the Gospel to spread to all people, but also because he knows we were made to serve and help other people, and when we don’t do that, we will feel restless.

In the Garden of Eden, before sin, Adam and Eve’s job was to partner with God for the betterment of the world.  The is still our job.  When we just focus on ourselves, we are always going to feel like something is missing or not right, but when we give ourselves to others and help them, the way Christ commanded we are going to feel more at peace and more fulfilled.

In the movie, see if there is anyone’s life is changed from serving and helping others?

Ephesians 4:32- Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

God wants us to forgive, but sometimes we think forgiveness is just about the other person, but forgiveness is also about us.  When we forgive someone that has hurt us or wronged us, it frees us from any control they would have had on us and frees us from anger that we might have had to that person.  When we are still angry or upset at someone, it negatively impacts all our relationships, including with God, moving forward. We need to be free so we can focus only on God.

In the movie, see if there is anyone that has not forgiven and if it is impacting how they treat others now.

John 15:13 - Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus never stopped being God.  When he came to the earth, he was truly human and truly God, which means that he still had all the power of God.  So, at any point while Jesus was on the cross, he could have called down legions of angels to get him down, protect him and extract vengeance on the people that put him on the cross.  However, Jesus used his power to serve and help others.  Jesus used his powers to protect us and save us from sin.  Power is not meant to be used to get our will or way, but to help all people and make sure God is getting his will and his way.

How does Sonic decide to use his power at the end of the movie.
