Family Movie Night - Playing with Fire

Image
Family Movie Night Devo – Playing with Fire    Read the following Bible verses before watching the movie. 1 Corinthians 12:7 - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. There are two very important things we can learn from this Bible verse.  Each one of us have a gift or gifts from the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes when we talk about gifts of the Spirit, we think of speaking in tongues or healing, but it can be baking, patience, management, sports, medicine, etc.  It is whatever we are naturally better at and naturally drawn to do.  It is what gives us great joy when we are doing it.  We all have gifts. Those gifts are to be used to glorify God and the betterment of the world.  We are not to use our gifts just to make money or get awards.  We are to use it to make God known.  If we just focus on ourselves, our careers and our accomplishments we will not have the “peace that surpasses understanding.”  In the movie, see how Sup is using

Before you watch the movie reading the following Bible verses and talking points. Hebrews 11:1-  Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. I always say that Faith is trusting God more than we trust our five senses.  Just because we can't see it or don't understand it, doesn't mean it isn't real or possible.  As you watch the movie see how Moxy believes in what she cannot see even despite people trying to convince her she was wrong.  Also, see how Moxy's faith in the unseen gave her hope and encouragement in her daily life. Ephesians 2:10 - For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. We are God's masterpieces.  A masterpiece is an artists best accomplishment.  It is their prized possession.  We are God's masterpiece.  When you look in the mirror, no matter what you look like or how you wish you looked, you need to rem

DIY DEVO - Rock, Paper, Scissors

Image
Challenge your family to a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.  If you have never played, you may have to explain the game.  You count to three and each player either makes a rock (fist), paper (lay hand flat) or scissors (two fingers) with their hand.  Rock beats scissors, scissors cut paper and paper covers rock. After a few rounds, ask your child... Okay, if you were in the middle of the desert and really needed water, which of these items would you pick to try to find water? Let them talk about it for a minute and try to get them to expand on what they pick. We talk about as Christians that we have to follow God and to follow someone you must be behind them and you must have your eye on them.  The same is true with God, because God doesn't always go in the direction we think He will go and he can do things we never imagined.   In Exodus 17, the people of Israel were wandering in the wilderness and needed water, but there was no water around them.  Moses went into this te

Family Movie Night - Sonic

Devotion on the movie Sonic Before the movie read these Bible verses and brief commentary Genesis 2:18- The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” God said it was not good for us to be alone.  We are made to be in community/relationship with God and with other people.  When we are isolated from God or from people, it can leave us feeling lonely, unsupported and unloved.  That’s not how God wants us to feel.  We can work on our relationship with God through reading the Bible, praying, going to church, helping others, etc.  We can work on our relationship with others by thinking about others and being a good friend.  If you want to have good friends, the first step is to be a good friend. In the movie, see if you can see how a relationship and/or sense of community changes people’s lives and perspective. John 13:34 - "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one

DIY Devotion - Fighting Sin and Plaque

All you will need for this DIY devotion is a tube of toothpaste.  A travel size would be better, so you don’t waste a whole tube of toothpaste, but either will work. Have you child squeeze the toothpaste into a bowl or plate (you can have fun with it and time them and say, "Let's see how long it take you to get the toothpaste out," or something like that).  Once they get done, say, “Okay, now put it all back.” Obviously, they are going to be unable to do it.  They might be able to get a little back in, but they will not be able to get all of it back into the tube. So, believe it or not, that toothpaste is like our sin.  We cannot get rid of our own sin.  Sin is anything we think, say or do that breaks God’s laws and makes God sad.  Once we sin, even a little one by accident, that sin is in our lives and there is nothing we can do to get rid of it.  We sometimes think if we just do enough good, it will get rid of the sin in our lives, but that is not true. I
