Family Movie Night - Playing with Fire

Family Movie Night Devo – Playing with Fire

Read the following Bible verses before watching the movie.

1 Corinthians 12:7 - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
There are two very important things we can learn from this Bible verse.  Each one of us have a gift or gifts from the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes when we talk about gifts of the Spirit, we think of speaking in tongues or healing, but it can be baking, patience, management, sports, medicine, etc.  It is whatever we are naturally better at and naturally drawn to do.  It is what gives us great joy when we are doing it.  We all have gifts.

Those gifts are to be used to glorify God and the betterment of the world.  We are not to use our gifts just to make money or get awards.  We are to use it to make God known.  If we just focus on ourselves, our careers and our accomplishments we will not have the “peace that surpasses understanding.”

In the movie, see how Sup is using his gifts to make his dad happy and to get to the top, not to serve others.  Also, see how this leads to frustration and not a lot of joy in his life.

Galatians 5:13-14 - For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

When you go back to the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had a job before sin and the fall.  Their job was to partner with God to take care of Eden.  This shows us that we were made to work with God to help the world be a better place.  It is when we serve others and partner with God that we truly grow in Christ and have joy and peace.

In the movie, see how Sup received more joy from serving people than doing his job.

Ephesians 5:1-2 - Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Serving and loving others does not just help us, but it can help others come to know Christ and correct the direction of their lives.  Jesus didn’t come with a bunch of rules and regulations demanding people get their lives right, but rather, he came and show grace and mercy and called people to a new life in Him.  Through love, not judgment, shame or hostility, we can lead others to true change and a new life in Jesus.

In the movie, see how Sup’s love for the three children changes them for the better.

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

God made us in his image, which, among other things, means we were made to be in mutual relationships.  Think about it, what is the image of God?  It is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all co-equal and co-eternal, working together for the creation and salvation of the world.  We work and function best when we are in mutual, life giving relationships (friendships, marriage, etc) with other people, especially people that share our values.

Interesting fact, bees will actually die if they are isolated from other bees for too long.

See in the movie how Sup's lack of relationships actually are hurting him and no allow him to deal with the grief of his Father's death.

Watch the Movie

1 Corinthians 12:7 - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
How does Sup’s life change for the better when he stops focusing just on his career and begins to show love to the people around him?  What does this teach you about who we are called to live and use our spiritual gifts?

Galatians 5:13-14 - For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

How does Sup’s life and relationships change when he begins to think about and serve others?  What does this show us about our life not just being about material and worldly things and achievements?  What does show you about the power of helping others?

Ephesians 5:1-2 - Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

How are these orphans changed by the love of the firemen?  Can you give a specific example?  What does this teach us about what is the best way to help others and bring about change?  How did Jesus use love to change the world?

Genesis 1:26 hen God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

What does this verse teach us about how we are made?  Why do you think God made us to be in relationship with others?
