Family Movie Night - Jumanji - The Next Level (Rated PG-13)

Devotional for Jumanji – the Next Level

Please note that this movie is rated PG-13 and for good reason.  There are several times that they unnecessarily use profanity, including GD.  Despite that it still has a redeemable value and good be good for the older children in the families since the last couple Family Movie Night Devotions we have put out there have been on movie for younger children.

Before the movie read…

1 Corinthians 12:12-27- 12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

What is the Body of Christ?
It is the Church, but not necessarily the building, but the people.  We are the Body of Christ, because if we have accepted Christ, he lives with in us.

What does these verses tell us about the individuals that make up the Body of Christ?
Each one is important; each one is valuable and each one has significant value.  We can’t function properly without each person using their gifts for the glory of God.  Also, each part is equally important, and if there is a part that does not seem as important, we need to give special care and attention to that part.

1 Corinthians 12:7 - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

In that same section, Paul reminds us that each person has been given a gift of the Holy Spirit – implied in this is that each person does have a gift of the Holy Spirit – and that gift is to be used for the common good of all humankind.

What do you think it means for the common good of people?
It means we are not to use our gifts in a selfish way that only bring glory or benefit to ourselves, but we are to use them in a way that makes this world a better place, makes Christ known (because nothing is better for humanity than that) and helps others.  Our gifts aren’t really meant for us, but for the world.

2 Corinthians 5:15-21 - So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

What word/phrase does Paul repeat several times in this passage?
Reconcile or reconciliation.  Reconcile means that we resolve issues and reform our relationship.  Paul is making sure that the hearers of this letter (it would have been read outline back when it was first written) understand that there should be no standing divisions in the Body of Christ.  We have been given a ministry of reconciliation, which means, we forgive, let go of grudges and work for unity in the body of Christ.

Why do you think unity in the Body of Christ/the Church is so important?
We can’t do the will of God if we are fighting or dividing resources.  Also, it looks bad to the world when they see division and fighting in the Church.  People wonder how can I find peace in Christ if you can’t even get along?  Church unity is important.  It doesn’t mean we don’t ever have issues, disagreements or fights, but that we put aside differences, forgive, focus on Christ and come back together.

Reread 1 Corinthians 12:12-27
1 Corinthians 12:12-27- 12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
Did you see people get frustrated with their gifts/abilities?  Who?  How?
Did you see people use their gifts to support each other?
Was everyone’s gift needed to complete the task?

1 Corinthians 12:7 - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
How did you see everyone using their gifts or the common good?

What relationships were reconciled by working together for the common good?

What did you learn about reconciliation through this movie?
