Family Movie Night - Devo - Ugly Dolls

Before you watch the movie reading the following Bible verses and talking points.

Hebrews 11:1- Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

I always say that Faith is trusting God more than we trust our five senses.  Just because we can't see it or don't understand it, doesn't mean it isn't real or possible.  As you watch the movie see how Moxy believes in what she cannot see even despite people trying to convince her she was wrong.  Also, see how Moxy's faith in the unseen gave her hope and encouragement in her daily life.

Ephesians 2:10 -For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

We are God's masterpieces.  A masterpiece is an artists best accomplishment.  It is their prized possession.  We are God's masterpiece.  When you look in the mirror, no matter what you look like or how you wish you looked, you need to remember that you are God's masterpiece.  Everything about you was designed by God for a purpose and you are very special to him.

As you watch the movie, take note of how the Ugly Dolls see themselves vs. how the perfect dolls see them.  Also, see how the Perfect Dolls view of the Ugly Dolls negatively impacts how they view themselves.

1 Samuel 16:7 -But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

When God sent Samuel to the house of Jesse to appoint a new King of Israel, Samuel was shocked that it was the youngest and smallest of Jesse's sons, David.  But God reminds Samuel, that He does not look at what the world looks at...he does not look at outward appearances, but he looks at our heart.

As you watch the movie, see if the perfect doll's hearts match their outward appearance.  Also, see if you can figure out which set of dolls had the more pure hearts.

Matthew 27:51 -At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split

When Jesus died on the cross, the temple curtain was torn in two "from top to bottom."  The temple curtain was believe to separate God from God's people.  Only the high priest on one day of the year could go behind the curtain to the Holy of Holies.  They believe that people were two sinful and broken to be in the presence of the Almighty.  However, when Christ died and offered us forgiveness, God tore the curtain (why it was from top to bottom) to show the world that Jesus had made atonement for our sins and now we could be free to be back into a right relationship with God.  Through Jesus Christ, we are free to come to God.

As you watch the movie, see if you see something that is obstructing the dolls from getting to what they desire.  Also, see what changes that at the end.

WATCH THE MOVIE

Hebrews 11:1- Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

How did Moxy’s faith in the unseen give her encouragement and hope during the first part of the movie?

How does your faith in God and eternal life give you encouragement to do the right thing and hope that everything will work for God’s good and our benefit?

Ephesians 2:10 -For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

How did all the dolls see themselves differently at the end?

How does understanding that you are God's masterpiece, made by him for a purpose change the way you see yourself?

1 Samuel 16:7 -But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Throughout the movie, how were the dolls guilty of looking at outward appearances and judging by them alone?

What can you do to make sure you are not just looking at outward appearances?
How can you see someone's heart?

Matthew 27:51 -At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split
How did the portal remind you of the curtain of God?
