DIY Children's Devotionals

Play a quick game of follow the leader with your children. 
After the game, asked them what determined what they did during the game?  Affirm all answers, but ultimately you are looking for them to say they followed leader or they did what the leader did.

One thing we can learn from that game is that whether in a game, school or life, who you follow will always determine what you do.  If you play on a team, you are following the coach, and the preferences of the coach will determine the way the team plays and what they do.  In school, if your teacher teaches you a certain way to do long division, then that is the way you will do it, and you will keep doing it that way until you get a new teacher and you begin to follow their way of doing it.  Who you follow determines what you do.

It is important to make sure we are following the right people.  First, and foremost, we should be following Jesus and when we follow Jesus, we are going to become more like him and do what he did.  In the Bible, a disciple was just somebody that was following a master and trying to become more like them.  Then, if we follow Jesus first, we also need to surround ourselves with people that also follow Jesus, so in learning from them, we can grow our relationship with Jesus.

We need to be very careful not to follow people who do not believe in Jesus or do things that Jesus taught us not to do, because in following them, it can actually lead us away from Jesus.  It can lead us to become less like Jesus and more like the person we are following and that is not good.

Throughout our lives, we are going to be playing follow the leader, so it is important that we make sure we pick a good leader that will lead us in the right direction.

For this devotion, you will need a couple small, new Easter items.  I like to go to CVS a day  or so after Easter and pick up several Easter items that are 50% or 75%.  I usually get something really inexpensive and very cheap.  You will need a Bible as well.  I just use one of my newer Bibles. DIY Devotions - Plugging in to Christ

This one is easy.  All you will need is your phone and charger cable.  In a casual setting, have your phone plugged in to the charger cable, but do not have the charger cable plugged into the wall or attached to a computer.   Just have it dangling in plain sight.   The point is you don’t want it to be charging. I think something is wrong with my phone.  I can’t do anything.  I have had it plugged into the charger for three hours, but it is just not working right.  (hopefully your children will say something about it not being plugged in).  It is kind of silly to think that my phone is going to charge if it is not plugged into something.  Believe it or not, Jesus actually said the same thing about us.  He said that we will not work correctly unless we are plugged in…but he wasn’t talking about being plugged in to a wall, he was talking about being plugged in to him, Jesus. DIY Children's Devotion - TURN THAT DOWN

DIY Family Devotion Tell your children that you need to have a very serious family meeting.  Invite them into the living room and then ask them how they are doing with all that is going on around them.  Before they answer, so “Hold on a second’ and turn up the TV real loud, turn on music (or ask your Alexa to play music) and then start vacuuming with one hand and be on the phone in your other hand and then start talking to them and say, “Okay, go.”  After a moment, stop and say, “Do you find it hard to have a conversation like this?” Believe it or not, God feels the same way.  We often want God to speak over the noise and craziness in our lives, but no matter how loud he gets, it will still be hard to understand him.  So, God has actually called us to find times throughout our day to “pause” the noise, find some quiet and listen to and for him.
