Family Movie Night - Spy in Disguise
We know that during this time of social distancing that one of the fights is to keep children from watching TV or being on electronics the entire day. However, this weekend, instead of fighting it watch a movie. Below you will find some questions and Bible verses that will help make the movie Spy in Disguise, which is On Demand and Streaming into a devotional time for the entire family. We warn you that Spy in Disguise is rated PG and there are a few scenes that I probably wish weren't in there, but overall it is appropriate for the entire family and received a 75% on rotten tomatoes.
Before the move, go over the following Bible verses...
Romans 12:21- Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
The only way that we can truly overcome and fight evil in our world is through good as we saw with Jesus on the Cross. When we fight a wrong with a wrong, it produces more sin that spreads and causes disunity, restlessness and tension in our world. The ends never justify the means!
Matthew 23:12 - For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Christ has called his disciples to be humble. This means that we never think of ourselves more highly than we should, we always realize other people are just as important as we are, and that we are willing to both help and be helped. The only perfect person has already walked the earth and died on a cross, when we recognize our need for his grace, it helps us become more appreciative of people, places and things. We see each day, each interaction and each opportunity as a gift from God.
1 Corinthians 12:12,15-20 - Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. .
15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
A few months back a friend of mine was having some health issues. It was nothing major, but she was constantly tired, was having mood swings, couldn't eat and more. It turned out all of these problems were caused by her thyroid. A tiny little gland in her throat was not working right and was causing problems throughout her body. Whether it is our body or the body of Christ, everything has to work together to be completely healthy. Every part/ every person matters. Even though some pieces are bigger or more visible all of the pieces are valuable. We need to treat every person as valuable and having something to offer.
Ephesians 2:10 - For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
We are God's masterpieces. His best work. The apple of his eye. Take a minute and let that sink in! Each one of us are different because God made us different. We are not pumped out by a machine, but we are made by the very hands of God and he takes the time to make each one of us special. He gives us gifts and talents that we can use for His glory. We should never be jealous of other people's talents, but realize those are not the gifts God has given us. However, he has given us gifts that are equally important for the work of His Kingdom. Nor should we ever think someone's gifts are not as important as ours. They may be different, but God will use them all.
As you watch the movie see if you can pick up on any of these themes. Then at the end of the movie talk about how each one of these themes were present and how they helped the Spies to conquer the “bad guys.”
What character was not humble at the start of the movie? How did being humble make him a better person and spy?
At first Lance was trying to fight evil with brute force and by destroying them, but evil kept coming back. How did we see Romans 12:21, fighting evil with good, played out in the movie? How did it lead to a better solution?
Lance doesn’t feel anyone had anything offer him at the beginning of the movie. He did it his way, on his own, how he wanted. How does Lance come to better understand and live out the understanding of 1 Corinthians 12, that people are a body that work together and Ephesians 2:10, we are God’s masterpieces, and all have valuable contributions to make?
What else did you see?
